Plot summary

Chhaya is an ex-convict who is released from prison three days ago when his wife Laura dies in a car accident. Shadow is devastated by her death and is distraught to learn that she died with her best friend, Robbie, with whom she has had an affair. He works as a bodyguard for a mysterious man on Wednesday and travels across America with his acquaintances on Wednesday. Shadow realizes that on Wednesday, Odin is an avatar of All-Father and is recruiting American manifestations of the old gods, whose powers have diminished as the number of his believers has declined, against the new American gods. To participate in the fight – manifestations modern life and technology, such as the Internet, media and modern means of transportation. Shadow is met by a leprechaun named Mad Sweeney, who gives Shadow a magical gold coin after killing Shadow in battle. Shadow later inserts a coin into his wife’s grave at his wife’s funeral, inadvertently bringing her back from the dead as a semi-survivor.

The New Gods kidnap Shadow (using a group of shadowy men in Black-led by the mysterious Mr. World), but Laura saves him, killing several men in Black in the process. On Wednesday, Shadow hides, first with Mr. Ibis (Thoth) and Mr. Jacquel (Anubis), who run a funeral parlor in Illinois and then in the Great Lakes community of Lakeside. Men in Black, especially Mr. Town, who blame Shadow for the death of his friends, are followed.

The new gods want to parade with Wednesday, but assassinate him in the meeting. The act inspires the old gods, and they rally in Rock City to face their enemies in battle. While retrieving Wednesday’s body, Shadow is surprised to discover his old prison cellmate and protector, working as a driver for Lou’s Lismith, New Gods. Shadow is tied with Wednesday’s contract to keep his vigilance to reapply Odin’s time hanging from a “World Tree” pierced by a spear for nine days. During these nine days, he is visited by Horus, who has gone mad from a long stay as an eagle. Chhaya dies and visits the land of the dead, where he is seen by Anubis. Chhaya realizes that he is the son of Wednesday (Odin), who is conceived as part of the deity’s plans. Meanwhile, Mr. Town arrives at the World Tree, Mr. World orders him to cut off a branch.

Horus finds Easter and convinces him to bring Shadow back to life. Shadow realizes that Mr. World is actually Lo’s (Loki) lismith and that Odin and Loki are working a “two-man con”. He circled the birth of Chhaya, disguised in prison and met Loki on Lora’s death. Loki arranged for Odin to be killed, thus making the war between the new and old gods a sacrifice for Odin, while also restoring Odin’s power, allowing Loki to feed on the chaos of the battle as well.

Laura chooses to take a hiccup in Rock City and meets Mr. Town, who does not realize who she is and they agree to travel together. During their journey, Laura discovers who Mr. Town is and, once they arrive at their destination, kill her and take a branch taken from the World Tree. She then meets with Loki and manages to stab him with a World Tree branch, which turns into a spear in the form of a knife.

Shadow arrives in Rock City and confronts Loki, now severely wounded, and the ghost of Odin, who reveals his plans. Shadow travels to the site of the fight and reveals that the two sides have nothing to lose and everything to lose with Odin and Loki as the only true winners. Shadow tells them that the United States is a bad place for the gods, and he advises them to return home. The gods depart, Loki dies and Odin’s ghosts disappear. Laura asks Shadow to take the coin from him, which he does, and eventually, he dies.

In Iceland, the shadow meets another incarnation of Odin, which was created by the belief of the original inhabitants of Iceland, which is much closer to the legend Odin on Wednesday. Shadow accuses Odin of Wednesday’s action, in which Odin replies that “He was me, yes. But I’m not that.” Shade gives the glass eye to Odin on Wednesday, which Odin keeps in a leather bag. Shadow performs a simple sleep-of-hand coin trick, pleasing Odin, who asks for double performance. Shadow then performs a small piece of real magic, drawing a golden coin from somewhere, before walking away from God and exiting the world.
